Musselburgh Hat & Gazzal Happy Feet PROJECT

Musselburgh Hat

Musselburgh is a really cool hat project - it's a double-layer beanie that's basically knit in a tube from the top down, and then back up again. The pattern is available in 6 sizes, from baby to Adult XL, and it includes instruction for NINE tensions of yarn, ranging from light fingering to DK weight.

Our Project

NOTE: our tension ended up being a little bit tighter than the instructions we followed, so our hat came out a little bit smaller than expected.

We made size Child/Adult S with 3mm/US2.75 needles at the pattern instructions for 6.5sts/inch, and Gazzal Happy Feet. It came out at a slightly smaller tension (around 7sts/inch, or 28sts/10cm) so let this be a lesson to check your tension (or at least keep an eye on it, especially once you get past the crown increases).

Laying flat and unstretched, the finished hat measures about 15" in circumference. If I put it on without the cuff rolled up it fits my 21" head comfortably. For most adults (except my mother who has an impossibly tiny 20" head) I suggest making an adult size Medium or larger.

Gazzal Happy Feet is a springy, machine washable blend of 75% merino wool and 25% polyamide. It's soft and has a great squish factor, which I really appreciate in a sock yarn (I'm not a fan of a hard, stringy, or splitty sock yarn). I really like the tension of the yarn on the 3mm/US2.75 needles, it's nice and springy, there are no gaps, and the hat is going to be gorgeously warm in the winter! If your tension is fairly regular and you are using the same yarn, I suggest going for the 3mm/US2.75 needles and following the instructions for 7sts/inch, and your hat should come out close to the expected size.

Materials

Gazzal Happy Feet is a hand-dyed yarn, perfect for 'pair' projects, like socks and mittens (or any other project that calls for fingering weight yarn). Each skein is comprised of two mini-skeins, so you'll have exactly enough portioned out to make each sock. Its softness and bounce makes it a delight to work with, providing both beauty and comfort. Hand-dyed in rich colourways, your projects will showcase a pleasing colour shift. It is also OEKO-TEX Standard Certified (it has been tested and certified to be free from over 1000 harmful substances).
